album magazine advert draft

here is the first draft of the magazine advert;
Looking at this I feel it is too similar to the front cover, although some artists use the same image to help the advertising campaign I feel for a magazine advert the image can be slightly different and can show off more of the shots taken from the photo shoot.  I intend to create another advert using a different but still similar photo.

Album Cover

For my album cover I have decided to have a BCU of 'Up and Coming' with tape over his mouth.  With the title of 'Outspoken' I feel the juxtaposition of being outspoken and having tape over his mouth works well.

I feel using the tape helps to symbolise the censorship of the media.

may vision for the album cover is similar to the white light shots in my music video.  I find the white light shots very flattering and dramatic.  As you can see below it creates a clear and crisp photo that would stand out against all the other album covers, this still from the music video has inspired my album cover.  I also feel it would create synergy to use a similar (but not the same) image.
The bright white background helps to create a professional look to the picture and helps 'Up and Coming' to stand out.

Using the tape will help to create a dramatic album cover and will hint to the censorship of the media.

Censorship of the media is a very big deal, very recently it has been a main issue.  From the phone hacking scandals to the recent Charlie Hebdo incident in Paris.  Censorship is an on going argument; the case of creative freedom to safety of the public.

Target Audience

Selecting a target audience is a crucial way to focus marketing on a selected group.

Focusing marketing on a group of people that are not interested is simply a waste of money.  Selecting a target market helps to influence a group of interested people.

I see 'Up and Comings' to have a wide target audience.  ranging from the age of 13 to those who enjoy listening to new music.  Although his music and his video may be slightly experimental and a little 'out there' I feel his music is mainstream enough to be played on radio (maybe with a few edits).  Looking towards exact target audience I feel 'Up and Coming' would relate to many kinds of music lovers, mainly those who are wanting more from their pop stars of today.

Many music consumers feel the industry is tainted and is only out their to make money, not art.  With many new artists unable to sing live or perform well the consumers feel a little short changed and disheartened.

I feel 'Up and Coming' is here to revitalise the music industry, creating art for creating's sake and not money.

I feel 'Up and Coming' could have a universal appeal.  Giving those who are fed up with modern music what they need from a modern pop star, and giving the rest a catchy song to sing a long too.  For those who don't appreciate his music or persona, they will have admiration for his obvious talent.

Tape

For my album cover for 'Up and Comings' 'Outspoken' my idea was to play with the juxtaposition of being outspoken and being forced not to speak.  for the album cover I decided to have a sort of tape to cover my mouth, this would then contain the album title.  Obviously the tape I have to use has to been safe for contact next to the skin, I also don't want to use household sellotape as this would not give a dramatic effect.  My search for tape ended up by a roll of silver gaff tape.

Here is the tape;

To make sure it was suitable to be placed next to my face I quickly tested it out with a very small piece of tape.  After I was assured it was safe I then experimented with the length of tape.  Here is the best result;

After taking these shots I then filmed me pealing the tape off my mouth.  From this video you will be able to see although it does peel off, it does take a while.  therefore I shall try and only use the tape when I need to and minimise the use.

Aura reactions

After finishing my video I allowed the year 12s to watch it and write down their reactions.  getting others to watch and comment will help me to improve my video, if improvements are needed.   This was shown on the projector, here is a short clip of them watching it;

Here are the reactions of the students;

Sophie Rose

  • -        The dancing was really good how everyone was synchronised
  • -        The sped up bits were really good
  • -        Lip syncing was good
  • -        I like how there wasn’t just one person singing for the whole time

Emily Rose
  • ·       Lip syncing was really good and so was the dancing.
  • ·       Lots of different scenes- looked effective
  • ·       I didn’t feel like the lyrics were inappropriate for my age and didn’t feel uncomfortable with the younger girls dancing to them, but I can see how some people would so it’s good that you have a way to overcome this
Alistair Neil

  • Lighting in some shots were too dark, which made it difficult to see
  • Quick editing is good
  • Unclear what is shown on the first two shots

Jack Sutherland
  • The editing was very well done. I really liked it!
  • A good variety of clips
  • A little dark at times
  • Good characters in the video

Ruvimbo Mbirimi

  • Like the use of lip-syncing in the video
  • Good use of dark background, makes it's different and interesting.

James Wilkes
  • Consistency of darkness
  • Sped up dancing with the tempo of the music
  • Editing of camera angles was well-suiting
  • Throne scenes were good - showed power
Almost all of the feedback was good, the only complaints were 'too dark to view'.  As this was shown on a projector in daylight I feel it was viewed in very light conditions and was not seen at its best.  Although these are serious complaints I am not going to worry about them too much as from computers and phones the images are clear and viewable.  Although the lightness of a clip is essential to be able to watch it, I feel the conditions that my audience watched it in were not suitable and therefore these issues brought up are not a problem.

Competition

I have decided to look for other Aura music videos to see how mine compares.  Looking at the 'competition' will help me to improve my Aura video and will also give me a want to make mine better.  Looking on YouTube their are very few music videos made for this song (something I have previously researched) here are a selection of the few.

after watching these videos it is clear to see that the first one (the drag fan video) is probably the best, with professional looking editing and filming, it looks like this is the one to beat.  The others look very amateurish in their creation.

I believe the first video has set the standard, and now I have to beat it!
